Stone Identity & Quality

This is a 9.10 ct natural Ceylon yellow sapphire rough measuring 17.1 × 10 × 8.1 mm, sourced from Marapana village around mining in Sri Lanka.

The sapphire is unheated and classified as facet-grade rough based on the usable cleaner section visible within the material. Approximately 10 mm of the rough length shows a cleaner area that can be considered during faceting orientation.

The rough also preserves part of its natural crystal morphology rather than being completely rounded. It has been described as eluvial material, meaning the rough is associated with near-source weathering rather than a strongly water-worn alluvial form.

This does not mean the entire 9.10 ct can become one clean finished gemstone. The included areas and natural geometry must first be mapped carefully.

Color & Visual Characteristics

The sapphire shows a natural yellow to warm golden-yellow body color.

Under ordinary reflected light, the rough has a softer warm yellow appearance. Under stronger transmitted illumination, the yellow becomes brighter and the degree of transparency within different parts of the crystal becomes easier to evaluate.

The cleaner section allows useful light transmission, while other portions show natural internal characteristics and surface-related features.

Because rough sapphire can appear different depending on lighting direction, wetting, background and orientation, the finished color should not be guaranteed before cutting.

Internal & External Features

The stone contains both cleaner facet-grade material and visibly included sections.

Close inspection of the photographs shows natural internal features, small mineral-like inclusions, surface-reaching irregularities and rough crystal surfaces. Some included areas are concentrated toward portions of the rough that may potentially be removed during planning.

The approximately 10 mm cleaner section is therefore particularly important because it gives the cutter a possible working area from which to plan the main finished stone.

As with any natural sapphire rough, deeper inspection under transmitted light and magnification is recommended before final orientation.

Cutting, Specimen, or Treatment Potential

The rough’s elongated dimensions of 17.1 × 10 × 8.1 mm provide several possible orientation choices, but the final plan should follow the internal structure rather than simply copying the external outline.

The partially preserved crystal shape can also help identify natural growth direction and possible cutting orientation.

No specific finished weight, clarity grade or cutting result is guaranteed from rough alone.

Source & Ethical Position

Danushka Gems & Minings works directly within Sri Lanka’s gemstone sourcing network, travelling through producing areas and maintaining relationships with miners, mine owners, local buyers and source dealers.

Our approach is to show natural rough as honestly as possible — not only the most attractive angle.

For cutting material, we photograph the gemstone under different lighting conditions so buyers and cutters can understand cleaner areas, inclusions, external structure and possible orientation before making a decision.

For suitable stones, custom cutting and certification can also be discussed according to the buyer’s requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. It is a natural Ceylon yellow sapphire rough.

No. The stone is currently unheated.

It was sourced from Marapana village around mining in Sri Lanka.

No. The rough contains included areas, but approximately 10 mm of its length shows a cleaner facet-grade section.

That cannot be guaranteed from photographs or rough dimensions alone. Final recovery will depend on orientation, inclusion removal, pavilion depth and the clarity level the cutter chooses to prioritize.
